The 7 Universal Month in the 4 Universal Year: A Time for Reflection and Assessment

We're almost there, folks! One last month to go, and we can put 2020 in the can. One year ago, I looked at the numerology aspects for the upcoming new year, and I had a clenching feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach. I thought to myself, "2020 is going to be the year where the debate about reality will come to a head. It is poised to be the year of the war on facts." And boy, oh boy, did that ever come to pass. What a challenging, painful, aggravating year it's been. Like so many, I'm more than ready to kick this wretched year to the curb.

But first, we have one last month to navigate.

As I say every month: if you're new to this blog series, please check out this post to better define the 4 Universal Year. What I'll be discussing are numerology influences on a larger scale. We see these influences in our headlines and the changing attitudes of the masses. They are different from our own individual Personal Years, which we feel on a far more personal level. The Universal Year indicates the lessons all of humanity may be learning as a whole.

November proved to be another memorable month. We received promising news about the upcoming release and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, renewing hope of finally stabilizing our societies and communities (4) by providing much needed medical intervention and care (6). The spiking of COVID-19 cases prompted more waves of lockdowns in Europe. And in the United States, after several long and agonizing days, a winner for the Presidential Election was declared, prompting multiple lawsuits (themes of justice fall under the 6's umbrella) revolving around who gets to hold the office (4).

Whew. Once again, it was exhausting.

Well, the 6 influence is passing away, and December will drop the 7 vibe on our collective doorsteps. What might that mean?

The 7 delivers us themes and lessons about:

  • Dealing with our own shadow and the darker sides of our nature. Asking ourselves difficult questions about hard truths.

  • Pulling within. Deep self-examination. Opening one's self to the great mysteries of life.

  • Assessing our spiritual and physical health. Rest and recuperation.

  • Sharpening our skills and talents through study and steady, quiet application.

  • Releasing what no longer works for us.

  • Learning to be still. Meditation.

  • Being alone versus being lonely. Quieting walking to the beat of one’s own drum.

How do the 4 and 7 play together?

Well, it so happens that they have several themes in common. Both the 4 and 7 value attention to detail, often to the point of perfectionism. Both emphasize approaching problems and projects with a methodical and steady hand. And when the subject matter is just right, both the 4 and 7 demonstrate unswerving laser-precision focus. Both are seekers of truth and correct information, and they fare better when they have fixed, substantial theses upon which to stand. Give them a fount of data that speaks to their interests, and you'll find these two working late hours, pouring relentlessly over and continuously refining their findings.

Yet the two numbers part ways from there.

The 4 is one of numerology’s physical numbers, whereas the 7 falls on the spiritual numbers plane. While the 4 seeks practical utilization for the information at hand, the 7 continues to ask, "what if?" The 4's ultimate goal is obtaining certainty, while certainty is usually elusive to the 7 (often owing to the 7's relentless questioning nature). Anthony Bourdain, a 7 Birthpath and 7 Destiny, once famously said, "certainty is my enemy. I'm all about doubt— questioning oneself and the nature of reality constantly." (For more about Anthony Bourdain and his 7 nature, click here.) The 7 is a doubter, a questioner, and a skeptic.

The 4 prizes order and structure, and they thrive knowing where they fit in the grand scheme of things, whereas the 7 senses from very early on that they don't seem to "fit" anywhere. When they feel pressured to adapt out of expectation to "belong," this can cause internal upheaval and stress. The 7 is more likely to pull a quiet, undetected exit and go into isolation. The drive to seclude themselves further confirms their inner belief that they are incapable of blending in with others because they are just too different than the regular Joe/Jo on the street.

So. How might that manifest in our world, and what are we supposed to do with it?

- As the westernized (and western-influenced) world rolls into its traditional holiday season, which prizes togetherness and gathering, we're still eyeball-deep in the COVID-19 pandemic- and that 4 vibe is still with us, urging us to follow sensible and practical protocols. Pepper in that isolating 7 vibe, and it's no surprise what equation that yields. In other words, we all know that many families will be separated from one another this year. Bear this in mind as you assess your own holiday plans: the numbers are literally encouraging all of us to have quieter celebrations, whether we personally like it or not. With the 4 prizing tradition, perhaps some of your most cherished traditions can be modified- or you could invent a new one entirely.

- The overarching holiday season is likely to be imbued with a feeling of reflectiveness and contemplation. Folks may be feeling depressed as a result. Yet, if we take a page out of the 7's book, we can see this as an opportunity to uncover new meaning and depth in how we internally move through this time of year. For the religious and spiritually-minded, this is a potent time for deepening one's relationship with God/Higher Power. For the non-religious, this is a great time to view your individualized evolution through the lens of nature. For so many in the Northern Hemisphere, these are the darkest days of the year. Think of the Danish and Norwegian concept of Hygge: surround yourself in books, wrap yourself in a comforting blanket, gather around a fireplace (real or virtual), drink hot tea, journal, write down your ideas, and pay attention to your dreams. If you don't live in colder climes, take quiet and solitary walks in natural environments. Make this the time to take stock of your own life and contemplate how you wish to move forward into the new year. Whether or not you are a spiritual person, there are opportunities everywhere to enrich your inner life and sense of connection to things greater than yourself.

- 7s are renowned for unearthing and revealing previously hidden truths. December could be a month of profound revelations, which is why it's all the more critical to lean into the strength of our inner worlds. When the winds outside are blowing heavy and hard, we are much less likely to be rocked if our own mooring is steady.

- The 7 is a vibe that potentially shifts the mood of aloneness into loneliness, but it doesn't have to be that way. Lots of other people may be feeling isolated, as well. What can you do to bridge that divide? Write some letters, share books, drop someone a line. Show support to the isolated, and you may find yourself feeling a little more connected. You’ll know you’ve gone too far down the 7 wormhole if sadness and depression starts to set in. Pull yourself out by focusing on making others feel a little more connected, and it will help you too.

A few other quick items of note:

- Last month, I touched in specifically on the USA's 6 Personal Year and 8 Personal Month. As we've seen, it proved to be every bit as stubborn and unyielding as I expected, and then some. Arguments continue to abound over who gets to have the power of the highest office in the land. December will become a 9 Personal Month. 9s often signal endings, so it's safe to assume this matter will become resolved in December, once and for all (cough cough, Electoral College, cough cough).

- This is the final month of our 4 Universal Year. When approaching a major vibrational shift, numerology and its energies follow a similar pattern to astrology. There is a shadow period, a time of blended energies, that we start to sense from the upcoming year. Think about the moon phases: New, Waxing, Full, Waning- you get the idea. Our 4 Universal Year is in its final stage of waning. We launch our brand new 5 Universal Year on New Years Day, the equivalent of the "New Moon." We instinctively feel that pull to set brand new intentions, make resolutions, etc. We may start to see hints of that 5 Universal Year wanting to peek out, signaling a time of significant shifts, changes, a desire for new adventures, and anxiousness to get out into the world. I think we have justified reasons to be hopeful about the upcoming new year and beginning to put the nightmare of COVID-19 behind us. Still, I don't think that means this change will come easy. I will write more about that next month in my upcoming blog devoted entirely to the 5 Universal Year.

In conclusion, the ever-probing, ever-questioning 7 asks, "What does it all mean?" The good news? You get to find that answer for yourself. Don't be afraid of being alone. When we slow down, when we shutter out the external noise and boost our internal signals, incredible revelations catch up to us. From there, we can create magic of the highest order.

Notable quotes for the 7/4 combo:

"There is a solitude, which each and every one of us has always carried with him, more inaccessible than the ice-cold mountains, more profound than the midnight sea; the solitude of self. Our inner being, which we call ourself, no eye nor touch of man or angel has ever pierced."
Elizabeth Cady Stanton

“My imagination functions much better when I don't have to speak to people.”
Patricia Highsmith

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more”
Lord Byron

“I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time. To be in company, even with the best, is soon wearisome and dissipating. I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.”
Henry David Thoreau, Walden

”Silent night, Holy night! All is Calm, All is Bright.”
